Piping Pillows for a Designer Edge

Adding piping transforms your cushion creations from beginner to designer. Here’s a step-by-step guide to getting that luxury edge.

Supplies

Front material

Back material

Pillow insert

Piping, roping, or trim

Standard sewing supplies

Zipper foot- optional

Measure

  • Measure pillow insert lengthwise, from seam to seam and add 1″.
  • Measure pillow insert the other way, from seam to seam and add 1″.
  • Measure all the way around the seam and add 2″.

Use measurements as calculated above.  In this example the pillow is 12″x16″ so fabric was cut to 13″ x 17″ and the piping was 58″.

*Tip-  Try mixing fabric colors and textures.  In this example a rich purple crushed velvet plays against a deep green taffeta. The result: eggplant elegance!

Prep and cut fabric.  If your piping might unravel, dab Fray Check on the ends.

Lay fabric facing up and pin piping as pictured above.

Clip corners to add flexibility.

Stitch piping in place.

Pin the backing fabric on top, right sides together.

This is where perfection is earned! Sew as close to the piping as you can.  A zipper foot or walking foot will help you get close. Leave a gap for turning and stuffing.

Turn pillow cover right side out.

If there are any sections where the piping isn’t close enough to the pillow’s edge, this is a good time to make corrections. Sew opening by hand.  A blind stitch will look the best.

Toss your pillow on a bed, couch or accent chair.
