Custom Crafted Buttons- Machine Embroidered Design

Simple kits make it easy to customize your buttons.  This project is a great way to try out the machine embroidery options on your sewing machine.

YOU WILL NEED

Using interfacing or a double layer of fabric is optional, depending on your fabric weight.  Extra stability is great for embroidery but too much bulk will make it hard to complete the button.

Pick up the kit you need according to the size of the button you want.

Open your kit carefully!  You will use the cardboard backing as a pattern for your material.

Lightly trace your half circle onto your material. Carefully flip your pattern and trace the other half off your circle. This is your template.  Do not cut out the circle- you’ll want to grip the edges while you work.

Attach the presser foot that goes with the embroidery stitch you’ve selected.  Carefully sew/embroider your design.

Cut out the circle

Place your embroidered fabric upside down on the mold and top it off with the button shell.

Press button shell and fabric into the mold.

Tuck fabric into the button shell.

Set back on top of the button.

Use the pusher to press button pieces together.  For thick fabric, gentle taps with a hammer will help snap the back into place.

Tips:

  • Practice first to get the hang of your machine’s embroidery features.
  • Test out various size settings to achieve the look you want.
  • Use your custom buttons as an inexpensive way to dress up throw pillows, window tie-backs, clothing and accessories!
